ABOUT
Who We Serve
The Meyer Foundation for Disabilities (MFD) serves some of the most vulnerable people in our community—adults with developmental disabilities.
Developmental disabilities are severe and chronic disabilities attributable to mental and/or physical impairment. Many with developmental disabilities, like those with Down syndrome, were born with their impairments, and nearly all see onset during childhood.
Most face substantial limitations in receptive and expressive language, learning, mobility, self-direction, capacity for independent living and economic self-sufficiency and the ability to care for themselves. And nearly all will need a lifetime of individually planned and coordinated care and services.
Available services for people with developmental disabilities decline proportionally as they age and fall off precipitously once they turn 21, aging out of the public school system. That leaves them with very limited opportunities to engage in social, recreational and skill-building activities.
That’s where MFD plays a role. We serve individuals in the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro and surrounding areas. We value partnering with other community agencies and organizations and invite people with developmental disabilities in neighboring areas to participate in our sponsored events and programs.
